The six-day Marangu route is one of the easiest ways to hike the Kilimanjaro Mount.
ITINERARY OF MARANGU ROUTE, DAY BY DAY
- DAY 1
- Elevation: From 1.850m to 2.835m
- Habitat: Rain forest
- From Machame Gate to Mandara Huts
- Distance: 8kms
- Hiking time: 3 to 4 hours
We leave Moshi in the early morning and we’ll drive for an hour until we reach Marangu Gate.
As the start of the trek makes us cross the rain forest, we recommend you to have your walking sticks and gaiters close to you. We spend our first night in Mandara Hut campsite, in the forest.
- DAY 2
- Elevation: From 2.835m to 3.720m
- Habitat: Moorland
- From Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut
- Distance: 11kms
- Hiking time: 5 to 6 hours
In the morning we leave the campsite and walk through a short stretch of forest up to moorland.
On this day we will carry lunch boxes in our bags because of the long hike distance. In the afternoon, we will reach the Horombo Hut where we will stay overnight.
- DAY 3
- Habitat: Moorland
- Hiking time: 3 hours
- Acclimatization only
We will spend the day there and take this opportunity to acclimatize gradually to the altitude.
During 3 hours, we will acclimatize your body for the following days. Then we will go back to the camp for lunch and having a short rest before dinner.

- Elevation: From 3.720m to 4.720m
- Habitat: Alpine desert
- From Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut
- Distance: 9kms
- Hiking time: 5 to 6 hours
This day we continue our ascent into the Alpine desert up to Kibo Hut. We will cross the saddle area between Mawenzi and Kibo Peaks,
This day dinner we will be served early to make sure you have got enough time to rest before the Summit Day as we will leave in the night.

- Elevation: From 4.720m to the summit: 5.895m
- Habitat: Arctic
- From Kibo Camp to Summit, then from Summit to Horombo Hut
- Distance: 15kms
- Hiking time: 10-11kms
This time, we will be walking very slowly (pole pole as we say in our country) to the top for our final summit.
Temperatures here will be very cold. We can usually expect -10 up to sunrise time.
At Uhuru Peak, you have reached the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro: CONGRATULATIONS!
After arriving to the Summit, we only stay for half an hour maximum, then we will have to start our descent back to Kibo Camp. You will need your gaiters and walking sticks during the loose gravel going down. In Kibo Hut, we will be having a short rest before continuing our way down to Horombo Hut.
Later in the evening, we enjoy our last dinner on the mountain and early sleep.

- Hiking time: 6 hours
After breakfast, we continue the descent down to the Marangu Park Gate. There you are, you have fully completed your trek through Kilimanjaro Mount and you receive your summit certificates.
The climate in the forest can be wet and muddy. Gaiters and walking sticks will be necessary.
A vehicle will be waiting for you at Mweka gate to drive you back to your hotel in Moshi.
